The urbanization of Sub-Saharan Africa is occurring more rapidly than in any other region in the world, at a historically unprecedented absolute rate of increase, within an institutional framework desperately lacking in resources. In step with its Sub-Saharan location, Ghana is experiencing unprecedented urbanization with currently 50% of its 23 million people living in urban areas; that share is expected to become 65% by 2030. The lion’s share of this growth is taking place in the administrative and commercial center, Accra, which has a population of more than three million people. It is exhibiting a growth rate in excess of 4% per year and is expected to double its population within 16 years

The Impact of Demographic Change on the Accessibility to Public Services for the Elderly on Children of Hannover, Germany

Late in 2009, the German government conducted an exercise to determine population trends for the next 50 years. This study indicated that the German population, which is approximately 82 million, is expected to decrease by 12 to 17 million people as well as experience a significant shift in its demographic profile (Statitistisches Bundesamt, 2009). The most significant finding from this exercise is the projection for a shift in the share of senior citizens and children with respect to the economically active population; children and seniors are expected to account for half of the entire population of Germany, whereas they currently only represent 40%. Additionally, the ratio of senior citizens to children is expected to increase to 2:1 by the year 2040, indicating a trend towards an ageing population. With this expected declining population and changes in the age pyramid, a renewed focus on planning for future investments has been initiated with an eye on effective and efficient resource allocation of social services

Bidirectional syntactic priming across cognitive domains: from arithmetic to language and back

Scheepers et al. (2011) showed that the structure of a correctly solved mathematical equation affects how people subsequently complete sentences containing high vs. low relative-clause attachment ambiguities. Here we investigated whether such effects generalise to different structures and tasks, and importantly, whether they also hold in the reverse direction (i.e., from linguistic to mathematical processing). In a questionnaire-based experiment, participants had to solve structurally left- or right-branching equations (e.g., 5 × 2 + 7 versus 5 + 2 × 7) and to provide sensicality ratings for structurally left- or right-branching adjective-noun-noun compounds (e.g., alien monster movie versus lengthy monster movie). In the first version of the experiment, the equations were used as primes and the linguistic expressions as targets (investigating structural priming from maths to language). In the second version, the order was reversed (language-to-maths priming). Both versions of the experiment showed clear structural priming effects, conceptually replicating and extending the findings from Scheepers et al. (2011). Most crucially, the observed bi-directionality of cross-domain structural priming strongly supports the notion of shared syntactic representations (or recursive procedures to generate and parse them) between arithmetic and language

The purpose of this thesis is to support a series of works that represent different ideas on my life experiences through memory, attachment to social media use, and digital appearance. By showcasing these works together, viewers can experience the ways in which I choose to visualize how digital content alters our memories, as well as our own opinions of ourselves.The paper begins with a background of myself, detailing how I arrived at this project and why I am interested in the relationship between memory and social media. It then provides examples of previous work I created to inform the reader of the visual language I use in my work. After that, it begins to use citations of research articles providing truth to the claims that I want to make, and finally then describes the work in detail. This paper is designed to open the door for others to consider the idea of externalized memories, and how we are actively altering the way we remember events from our past. It highlights the complex relationship we have with the digital world, and shines a light on how we are, knowingly or not, rewiring our brains on how to remember things

The doctrine of accommodation is the idea that God has, out of love, accommodated divine revelation to human frailty and sinfulness. This article summarizes the contributions of secondary resources on the doctrine of divine accommodation in John Calvin’s thought. These sources provide a paradigm for examining the doctrine of accommodation in the thought of the Methodist triumvirate, i.e., John and Charles Wesley and John William Fletcher. The author emphasizes that the Methodist triumvirate adopted and adapted the doctrine of accommodation and suggests that it provided a theological underpinning for the early Methodists’ accommodative practice of ministry
